Ghana to Send 40-Member Contingent to 2026 Commonwealth Games
The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) will present a 40-member delegation, including athletes, coaches and officials, at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
GOC President Richard Akpokavie confirmed the development at the Committee’s Annual General Meeting on Saturday, outlining the country’s planned participation for the Games.
“The plan is to send 40 athletes, coaches, medical officers, safeguarding officers and of course, led by the Chef de Mission for this year’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow,” he said.
The reduced team marks a significant drop from Ghana’s delegation at the 2022 Games in Birmingham, where the country was represented by 100 athletes comprising 60 men and 40 women.
The downsizing reflects broader changes to the Commonwealth Games programme, following a Commonwealth Games Federation decision in October 2024 to cut the number of sports from 19 to 10.
The move was part of cost-saving measures after the Australian state of Victoria withdrew as host due to rising expenses.
Sports such as cricket, hockey, rugby sevens, squash and wrestling were among those removed from the programme.
The 2026 Commonwealth Games will take place in Glasgow from July 23 to August 2.
