New Black Stars coach to be announced this week - Sports Minister Kofi Adams
The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has revealed that Ghana is on the verge of naming a new head coach for the Black Stars, with an official announcement expected this week.
The senior national team has been without a substantive coach since the departure of Otto Addo, who was relieved of his duties following the March international friendlies against Austria and Germany.
Speaking in an interview on Channel One TV last week, the Buem Member of Parliament indicated that the search process is in its final stages, with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) poised to unveil a new manager imminently.
“If by this weekend we don’t announce the coach, then by Monday at the latest we should be able to present our new Black Stars coach,” he said.
Adams also struck an optimistic tone about the team’s future, expressing belief in Ghana’s ability to compete at the highest level of world football.
“We have what it takes to go very far, maybe even win the World Cup. Let’s remain hopeful,” he added.
Several experienced names have been linked to the role, including Carlos Queiroz, Paulo Bento, and Fernando Santos.
The incoming coach is expected to assume duties ahead of a scheduled pre-World Cup friendly against Mexico in May.
Ghana, drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England, and Croatia, will open their World Cup campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.
The Black Stars will be aiming for a stronger showing after group-stage exits at both the 2014 and 2022 tournaments.
