Winning best coach at Boxing Ghana Awards is a big motivation - Joseph Martey

Young boxing coach Joseph Martey of Seconds Out Boxing Gym has described his 2025 Best Coach of the Year award as a major source of motivation, saying the nomination and recognition alone have inspired him to aim even higher in his career.

Martey received the honour at the Boxing Ghana Awards ceremony held on January 3 at Idrowhyt Events. He expressed his appreciation to the organisers and voters whose support, he said, contributed to the success of the event and to his achievement.

Reflecting on his recent accomplishments, Martey highlighted his role in leading three boxers to the African Youth Championship in Guinea last year, where Ghana emerged with an impressive haul of three gold medals and a trophy.

He also served as an assistant coach to Charles Quartey at the African Youth Games in Angola, helping the young Black Rockets secure one gold, one silver and two bronze medals in boxing.

The award-winning coach described the ceremony as “fantastic” and said he thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Martey was quick to acknowledge the support he has received throughout his journey, paying tribute to his colleagues at Seconds Out Gym, including Coach Darko, Coach Daniel and Peter Zwennes.

He also extended his respect to coaches from other gyms who have played influential roles, such as Dr Asare of Wisdom Gym, Ebenezer Adjei, popularly known as Killer, of Black Panthers Gym, Augustus Dodoo, also known as One Life, of Bukom Gym, and Akai Nettey of Attoh Quarshie Gym.
