Ghana’s Conquerors place third as ASFA from Senegal lifts TIREC International Rugby 7s Tournament Cup

International Rugby Sevens made a vibrant return to the Legon Rugby Stadium in Accra as Ghana hosted the eighth edition of the TIREC International Rugby 7s Tournament, bringing together elite clubs from across the West African sub-region.

Over two action-packed days, teams showcased blistering speed, physical endurance and technical brilliance in a festival of high-impact rugby that thrilled fans in attendance.

In the third-place playoff, Ghana’s Conquerors SC delivered a commanding performance, overpowering TRUC of Côte d’Ivoire 29–5 to secure a place on the podium.

The tournament climaxed with a dominant display from ASFA of Senegal, who emerged champions after a convincing 19–0 victory over Les Lions (LDB) in the final. The decider was an absorbing contest, rich in tactical discipline and valuable lessons in the modern game of Rugby Sevens.

Participating clubs included Conquerors SC (Ghana), ASFA (Senegal), Alligator RC (Benin), Élite RC (Togo), Conakryka RC (Guinea), TRUC (Côte d’Ivoire) and Les Lions (Burkina Faso).

Day two of the competition produced several decisive encounters, with ASFA edging Conquerors SC 12–5, Les Lions overcoming TRUC 12–7, and Élite RC defeating Alligator RC 19–7 in an intense showdown.

Beyond the action on the pitch, the atmosphere at the Legon Rugby Stadium was electric, as fans enjoyed pulsating rhythms from melodious Jamaican music that kept the venue alive throughout the tournament.

Ghana’s representatives, Conquerors SC, recorded a mixed run of results but remained competitive against some of the region’s finest outfits.

At the end of the well-organised tournament, medals and certificates were presented to the winners, participating clubs, match officials, media personnel, the Local Organising Committee and medical teams in recognition of their contributions.

The event was graced by the presence of Mr Herbert Mensah, President of the African Rugby Union, and Ms Rafatu Inusah, President of the Ghana Rugby Football Union, underscoring the growing stature of the tournament on the continental rugby calendar.
