$1m as 2024 WAFCON prize money is massive, says former Ghana captain Adjoa Bayor
Former Black Queens captain Adjoa Bayor has lauded the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for significantly boosting the prize money for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Ahead of the tournament’s kickoff, CAF announced a 100% increase in the winner’s prize money and a 45% rise in the overall prize pool — a move Bayor believes highlights the growing commitment to developing women’s football on the continent.
“There is a big difference from an organization point of view as well as financially speaking," she told CAFOnline.
"The prize money is now up to $1m. That is massive from CAF,” Bayor added.
Despite the promising development off the pitch, Ghana’s return to the WAFCON stage after a six-year absence began on a sour note, as the Black Queens suffered a 2-0 defeat to South Africa in their opening Group C fixture.
The team will look to bounce back when they take on Mali on Friday, July 11, at the Stade Municipal de Berkane. Kickoff is set for 16:00 GMT.
