Josh Acheampong has the potential to be a top defender in the future – Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has spoken highly of young Ghanaian defender Josh Acheampong, praising his potential and hinting at a bright future for the 18-year-old.
Speaking ahead of Chelsea’s Premier League clash with West Ham United, Maresca highlighted Acheampong’s talent and emphasized his belief in the defender’s ability to become a standout player.
“I really like Josh Acheampong,” Maresca said during the press conference. “In my opinion, he has the potential to become a top defender in the future.” His comments underline Chelsea’s focus on nurturing young talent as part of their long-term strategy.
Maresca also shared his approach to coaching young players, stressing the importance of flexibility in their development.
“With young players, I like to make adjustments. Nowadays, they can evolve very quickly,” he said, suggesting he’s dedicated to refining Acheampong’s abilities and preparing him for top-tier competition.
Acheampong, primarily a right-back but also capable of playing as a centre-back, has risen through Chelsea's youth academy and is currently with the Under-21 team.
He has recently been involved with the first team, particularly during the club’s pre-season tour of the United States.
The young defender made his senior debut last season in a Premier League match against Tottenham, which remains his only competitive first-team appearance so far.
