Why I rejected Black Stars coaching job - Michael Essien

Former Ghana midfielder, Michael Essien, has opened up on why he did not accept to coach the senior national team, Black Stars.

The former Chelsea midfielder was tipped to be part of Otto Addo's backroom staff.

However, speaking in an interview, Essien explained that although he was approached for the assistant coach position with the Black Stars, but he was not ready for the stress that comes with such a role at the moment.

According to him, leading training sessions, answering media questions, and handling other responsibilities require more experience.

However, Essien mentioned that he would be open to a coaching role in the future once he has gained sufficient experience.

“For now, I’m not considering being a head coach; it’s too stressful. Being the main man with all the media and cameras in your face is definitely not for me. But you never know. Maybe at some point, I would love to do it if that time comes,” he told Joy Sports.

Essien, after announcing his retirement in 2020 now works with Danish side, FC Nordsjaelland after completing his UEFA License A course in 2023.

He played for European clubs such as Lyon, Chelsea, Real Madrid, and AC Milan.
