Chris Hughton failed to correct Black Stars back passes - Nana Oduro Sarfo
Executive Council Member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Nana Oduro Sarfo says Chris Hughton failed to fix Black Stars back passes before the start of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Having opened their campaign with a 2-1 defeat against Cape Verde, the Black Stars needed a win against Egypt to brighten their chances.
Despite taking the lead twice against the record champions in their second group game, Inaki Williams and Osman Bukari's back pass cost the team as the Pharaohs fought back to secure a 2-2 draw.
The Black Stars exit the tournament after drawing 2-2 with Mozambique in their final group game. Jordan Ayew scored two penalty kicks in each half but the team conceded two goals in the 90th minute.
Addressing the performance of the team, Oduro Sarfo said Hughton's failure to address the back passes cost him his job.
“Chris Hughton failed to work on back passes. I watched the America and Mexico friendlies and the team made 42 back passes” he told Asempa FM.
“I asked the coaches why and they said they would work on it and because they didn't work on it, Inaki Williams committed an error and gave a back pass. Osman Bukari committed an error and gave a back pass. So the technical team were not good enough,” he said.
Chris Hughton has been shown the exit after the team's early elimination. A five-member committee has been instituted to recommend a coach to the Executive Council.
