Koforidua Sports Stadium ‘resurrected’; ready for grand commissioning by Akufo-Addo in December
After years of neglect and abandonment, the Koforidua Sports Stadium has finally been completed and is set to be commissioned by President Akufo-Addo.
This stadium is part of the "10 Multipurpose Youth Resource Centres Policy," a nationwide initiative aimed at enhancing the availability of high-quality sports facilities across Ghana.
The official commissioning is scheduled to take place on December 19, 2023.
The decision to revive the Koforidua Sports Stadium follows recent concerns raised by Ghanaians regarding the deteriorating conditions of some sports facilities, which were believed to have tarnished Ghana's sporting reputation.
The journey to revitalize this multipurpose sports center began in 2018 when President Akufo-Addo laid the foundation for its reconstruction.
This marked a turning point for a facility that had long been left in disrepair.
The project encountered challenges, including delays attributed to the global COVID-19 pandemic.
Despite these obstacles, the government has successfully overcome them, leading to the completion of the Koforidua facility.
It is expected to be commissioned as one of five stadiums by 2024, according to several reports.
The Koforidua Sports Stadium now boasts a wide range of state-of-the-art amenities, including a football pitch, a nine-lane athletic track, and courts for sports such as tennis, basketball, handball, and volleyball.
Additionally, the stadium features a modern gymnasium, an information technology hub, an entrepreneurship center, and a restaurant.
