‘I’m really impressed by your performance’ — Coach Hughton reacts to Jonathan Sowah’s Black Stars debut
Medeama SC striker, Jonathan Sowah, made his debut for the Black Stars in the international friendly game against Liberia in Accra last Tuesday, and executed an impressive performance that left Coach Hughton impressed.
Sowah also expressed his excitement after the game.
The 24-year-old striker's performance drew praise from both his teammates and coach.
Sowah entered the match as a substitute and immediately made an impact by setting up Jordan Ayew for Ghana's third goal, contributing to the Black Stars' 3-1 victory over the Lone Stars at the Accra Sports Stadium.
His debut performance has also highlighted the potential of local-based players who have faced challenges breaking into the Black Stars in recent months.
Taking to Instagram after the game, Sowah expressed his gratitude and excitement, writing, "Grateful for a wonderful assist to my big captain."
Ghana's captain, Andre Ayew, who was delighted with Sowah's performance, shared words of encouragement on social media, saying, "Jonathan Sowah, keep going, the future is bright."
Coach Chris Hughton was also impressed by Sowah's contribution to the team's success, particularly highlighting his impact when he entered the match.
Hughton said, "I’m really impressed by the performance of Fatawu Hamidu and Jonathan Sowah. Especially Sowah, he lifted the team when he came on."
As Ghana gets ready for their next friendlies against Mexico and the United States as well as their 2026 World Cup, which starts in November, Sowah will be looking forward to receiving more call ups in the future.
In 2023, Ghana will also compete in the Africa Cup of Nations with great expectations of capturing their fifth championship.
