Intellectual Content Has Lost Its Appeal — Tekno
Nigerian singer Augustine Miles Kelechi, popularly known as Tekno, has stated that intellectual content no longer appeals to audiences, noting that people now gravitate towards goofy and entertaining content.
He made this known during a chat with Yanga FM Lagos, where he shared his observations about the shifting taste of the public.
The 'Pana' crooner explained that he can watch content creator Carter Efe for hours, laughing at his goofiness because it is interesting.
He compared it to the era of comic actors Osuofia and Mr Ibu, noting that what made people love them was the "mumu" they displayed on screen, and that today, one can do the same from home and get paid for it.
He said:
"Intellectual no dey work again. Wetin I go do with your intellect? I can watch Carter Efe for hours and just be laughing at him just being goofy because that's interesting."
"Back in the day, when you dey watch Osuofia and Mr Ibu, wetin make you been like them? No be the mumu wey dem dey mumu? Now you can do the 'mumu' in your house and get paid."
His comments touch on the ongoing debate about the "Olodo Uprising," a term used by rapper YCee to describe the growing acceptance of ignorance and low-value content in Nigeria.
The Nigerian Voice recalls that YCee had earlier sparked ruckus on social media after expressing concern over the decline in the value placed on education, noting that the "Yahoo culture" had been replaced by what he called a "Peller culture," and describing the rise of the "Olodo" uprising as alarming.
He questioned the message being sent to young people when fame and financial success are linked to controversial or unintelligent online content.
