Kunle Afod Warns Loan Apps Over Unauthorised Use Of His Name As Loan Guarantor
Nollywood actor Kunle Afod has issued a stern warning to loan apps and lenders who use his name as a reference without his consent.
In a video shared on his Instagram page on Saturday, he expressed frustration over being contacted by loan companies to trace debtors who had listed him as a guarantor without his knowledge. He made it clear that he would not take responsibility for loans he was not informed about at the time of borrowing.
The Yoruba actor also recounted a particularly troubling incident where a loan app representative called him and began cursing him after he denied knowing the debtor. He said, "One of you called me and this guy started cursing me because I said I don't know the person that borrowed money from them, started raining abuses on me, even called back again and said, you think I don't know you? Ogun will do this, Sango will do this." He responded by warning that any spiritual attacks sent his way would be returned to the sender.
Afod also addressed the growing trend of loan apps harassing Nigerians, advising lenders to verify references before approving loans. He said, "When you borrow people money and later they run away or you can't find them or they are not picking your calls again or they are changing their number and you are calling me to now tell me that, sorry, somebody dropped your name, do you know so and so? They are owing us money and we can't find them again. I will not answer you."
He further sounded a note of warning to lenders to be more careful and not involve him in transactions he had no part in.
"If you don't call me when they want to borrow the money, don't call me when they japa," he stressed.
He also pleaded with the public and loan companies to stop calling him about debts he knew nothing about.
"I beg you in the name of God. I beg you all in the name of God. This thing that I am saying, I know it's affecting a lot of Nigerians but me, I am coming out to say I don't know about anybody that borrowed money from anybody."
He captioned the video with:
"To all loan apps and lending companies in Nigeria
Whenever you want to lend money to someone, please make sure you contact the people they provided as guarantors and confirm that they actually agreed to stand as guarantors.
Stop calling, threatening, or disturbing people who know absolutely nothing about the loan or your agreement with the borrower. It is unfair to involve innocent people in matters they have no knowledge of.
At the same time, anyone who borrows money should also do the right thing by making every effort to repay the loan as agreed.
Lenders should lend responsibly, and borrowers should borrow responsibly. Let’s respect each other.
