'Don't Call Me Tony' – Elumelu's Correction of Trainee Sparks Debate
Businessman and chairman of Heirs Holdings and United Bank for Africa, Tony Elumelu, has sparked mixed reactions after correcting a young lady who addressed him by his first name at a public event.
In a now-viral video, Elumelu was seen addressing his employees when a graduate trainee of the UBA Banking School stood up to ask a question, referring to him as "Tony."
Elumelu, who expressed shock at the address, quickly stopped her, insisting that she address him as "Chairman" or "Mr Elumelu."
The billionaire emphasized that he does not subscribe to that kind of casual address, adding that he doesn't believe in that "oyinbo life."
The video has since gone viral, generating widespread debate on social media about workplace culture and respect in professional settings.
