Old Students Of Xavier Supports Construction Of Dormitory Block
The 1997 year group of St. Francis Xavier Minor Seminary in Wa has donated an amount of GHC20,000.00 in support of the construction of an additional dormitory block to help ease congestion in the existing ones.
They also donated an amount of GHC1,000.00 to support the school's administrative work, GHȼ500.00 and a smock to the former Rector of the School, Rev. Fr. Cletus Segtub for his role in instilling discipline in them during their time in the seminary.
They also sponsored the long service award and the Overall Best Student Award with an amount of GHC300.00 and GHC200.00 respectively.
Mr. Anthony Bangdome Dery, an Architect at the Wa Polytechnic and also a member of the group made the presentation on behalf of the group to the Rector of the School, Rev. Fr. Pamphilio Tengan on the occasion of the Xavier Day Celebration which also marked the school's Speech and Prize Giving Day.
He said the donation was their widow's mite in appreciation to the school for giving them the best of education that helped in shaping their future and prayed that the school would continue to remain a top academic giant in the training of quality human resource for Ghana.
Mr. Dery also appealed to the students to learn hard so that after completing the school, they would continue to let their light shine to raise the name of the great Xavier institution.
Rev. Fr Pamphilio Tengan, Rector of the School took the opportunity to highlight the academic achievement of the school, saying there was considerable improvement in English Language this year as 17 students scored A1 in the subject as against two students last year.
He said two students obtained aggregate six in this year's West African Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) as compared to only two from last year.
'While rejoicing in this improvement when individual performance is considered, the performance of candidates this year, however, did not measure up to the performance of candidates last year', he noted.
'With almost the same number of candidates presented, there was a loss of over 90 percent A1s which drastically reduced the percentage of A1s from almost 50 percent of entries in subjects last year to slightly above 30 percent of entries this year.
Rev. Fr. Tengan noted that some students did exceedingly very well but others performed abysmally, resulting in a number of students obtaining aggregates of over 30, saying 'This is unprecedented as very often many of the students obtain aggregates lower than 25'.
He also revealed that this term the seminary participated in a number of competitions and came first in the Tourism Quiz and the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) e-Constitution Game Quiz competition.
The Most Rev. Bishop Richard Kuuia Baawobr, the Presiding Bishop of the Wa Catholic Diocese urged the students to be disciplined and invest in their studies in order for them to complete successfully and become good citizens.
Hajia Fusata Hamidu, Wa Municipal Director of Education said the region still looked up to Xavier as a role model and urged both students and masters to continue to maintain the discipline and high academic performance for others to emulate.
The Speech and Prize Giving Day saw about 42 awards to deserving students and teaching and non-teaching staff of the school.
Master Adigvom Lavrin Adanamsa who picked the best student in Biology and the Overall Best Science Student awards was adjudged the overall Best student of the school and was presented with a cash prize of GHC200.00.
