From Boniface Ablekpe, Kumasi
THE Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has initiated moves towards the establishment of an AIDS research and screening centre in the country in collaboration with the World Bank and the UN. He has already held discussions with officials of the Bank and is currently preparing a working document for study by the two institutions.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu dropped the hint when Miss Ghana, ' 99, Miss Mariam Sugru Bugri, called on him at the Manhyia Palace on Wednesday.
He said when everything goes on well the centre will be established in Kumasi and will facilitate screening of people for HIV/AIDS free of charge.
The Asantehene urged Miss Ghana to embark on an enhanced education programme to create awareness on the scourge of AIDS on the people, especially the productive youth. He condemned what he described as “the apathy of the Ghanaians towards the AIDS scourge” He also urged her to initiate programmes to support fellow women in the low income bracket to engage in gainful ventures to make them economically sound.
Miss Bugri said she was working on a project that will enhance women's education. She prayed for the support of the Asantehene, Asanteman and Ghanaians towards her participation in the impending Miss World Pageant.
