Cheshegu gets Early Childhood Development Centre

By Comfort Sena Fetrie, GNA Cheshegu (NR), March 31, GNA - The Baptist Child Development Centre (BCDP), a Christian NGO operating in the Northern Region has constructed an Early Childhood Development Centre (ECD) for the Cheshegu community in the Kumbungu district.

The two-classroom block with an office is equipped with child friendly furniture, 16 round tables, 128 small chairs, learning through Play Materials and fenced outdoor play equipment.

The Christian Children's Fund of Canada (CCFC) supported the (BCDP) with an amount of GH¢153,343 for the construction of the centre, which would benefit the Cheshegu and its surrounding communities.

Dr Terry Ansah, Executive Council member of BCDP speaking at the commissioning programme at Cheshegu on Wednesday said the BCDP started work at the community in 2008 with 200 sponsored children.

He said the BCDP worked with the highest children in its operational areas and the need for school block was very visible, which convinced CCFC to fund the construction of the block.

He therefore thanked CCFC for its continued support and gave the assurance that it would continue to partner CCFC to implement projects and programmes that had direct benefit to children and other vulnerable persons in society.

Dr Ansah appealed to the Kumbungu district directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES) to intensify its supervisory roles and advised them not to convert the facility into classrooms for the upper classes to defeat its purpose.

Mr Kwabena Tutor, Sponsorship Manager at CCFC said CCFC had been a reliable partner to development work and assured that more collaborative would be done especially in the areas of education and infrastructure expansion and development.

He said CCFC was working towards renovating one of the dilapidated school blocks at Cheshegu to enhance teaching and learning.

He advised the chiefs and people of the community to take full custody of the block and must not regard it as the property of CCFC or the Baptist Child Development Programme.

Hajia Abiba Saaka, the Kumbungu District Director of Education in a speech read on her behalf promised to ensure that the building was used for its intended purpose.

She appealed to CCFC and its partners to consider supporting other needy rural communities with similar infrastructure and facilities to improve teaching and learning at the lower level of education.
