Ga Royal Teiko Tsuru Celebrates King Tackie Tawiah I
The Teiko Tsuru Royal Ruling House, the Ga Paramount Stool Dzase and the Great People of the Ga – Dangbe State celebrate the outstanding achievements of an illustrious son, father and King of the Ga – Dangbe People, the late King Tackie Tawiah I.
The celebration is in commemoration of King Tackie Tawiah I's 114th anniversary since his passing.
The late Warrior King of the Ga State who reigned during the 'Golden Years' of Accra from 1862 to 1902 is still acclaimed as the most illustrious, progressive and enterprising of all the Ga Kings, hence the decision by the Teiko Tsuru Royal Ruling House and the Ga Paramount Stool Dzase to celebrate him in a grand class.
According to the Heads and Principal Elders of the Teiko Tsuru Royal Ruling House and the Ga Paramount Stool Dzase, the late King Tackie Tawiah I, was not only a development-oriented leader but someone who identified himself with his people and fought relentlessly to uphold the Ga-Dangme customs and traditions and above all, abolished obnoxious customs in the land.
According to the Ga Paramount Stool Dzase headed by Nii (Dr.) Tetteh Kwei II, being the legitimately Accredited Institution with the mandate to nominate, select and install a GA Mantse for the Ga State, King Tackie Tawiah I achieved outstanding peace, security and stability in the Ga-Dangme region during his reign and achieved a high level of social and political organization which united the people of Ga - Dangbe in facilitating their total participation in many social and economic projects which helped to improve the quality of their lives.
Additionally, the late Warrior King of the Ga State bequeathed to the Ga-Dangbe people and to all Ghanaians, a shining heritage of fealty, diplomacy, statesmanship, industry and progressiveness.
"For us as the Accredited Royal Institution, the Ga Paramount Stool Dzase believes that the rich and invaluable bequest must be preserved and enhanced by us to gild the annals of the Gold Coast and of Ghana and to make the present and future generations proud and edified," they said.
The Ga Paramount Stool Dzase and Accredited Heads of the Four Ruling Houses explained that, King Tackie Tawiah I was a direct descendant of King Ayi Kushi who founded the Ga Dynasty. The latter was born in 1817 as Nii Quarshie Tawiah to Nii Teiko Doku, the son of King Teiko Tsuru.
The Warrior King of the Ga State King Tackie Tawiah I was enstooled on September 12, 1862 as the twentieth King of the Ga State in an unbroken line of Royal descent and succeeded King Yaote who ruled shortly from 1859 to 1862.
King Tackie Tawiah I is acknowledged to have demonstrated an extraordinary sense of statesmanship by seeking the welfare of his people and could not be influenced with money or political pressure. The King was always ready to intercede for and defend the rights of the oppressed and the marginalized."
The reign of King Takie Tawiah I which lasted for forty years was the second longest after the reign of Nii Tetteh Ahinakwa, who reigned from 1740 to 1782.
The Warrior King of the Ga State King Tackie Tawiah I was hailed by the British Government for achieving a lot on the political and economic front as he successfully led his people to the numerous wars including the famous Katamanso, Mankattah, Anlo and Tordzee Wars.
