Former Chief of Naval Staff immortalised with school's name

Accra, May 9, GNA - A basic school, the Rear Admiral Dzang Memorial School, has been inaugurated at Nima in the Accra Metropolis, to improve access to quality education in the community.

The School, formerly known as Hillside School, was rebranded with the new name to honour Rear Admiral Chemogoh Kevin Dzang, of blessed memory, who Co-founded of the School, with his wife, Emelia.

The rebranding also included changing the pupils' outfit and school block from dark brown to some sparkling blue-black and white colours.

In a goodwill message read on his behalf, Professor Edmund Delle, the Chairman of the Convention People's Party, said the future of Ghana was tied to how well it developed its human capital - its children.

Consequently, he said: 'The Memorial School is one foundation on which our children will become future leaders and make mother Ghana proud.'

Prof Delle said Mrs Dzang had invested most of her life in nurturing children and the day was a reflection of all of her hard work and dedication.

'Our late brother Admiral Dzang, who was an inspirational leader, will be proud to be associated with this development,' he said.

'It is my hope and my prayer that this institution will develop the minds of our children to become great leaders like the Late Admiral Dzang and do more to develop our society with the help of the our teachers and managers of this institution,' he said.

Mrs Victoria Susuawu, the Head teacher of the School, said it had come back to life and it would produce many scholars for the community.

'The aim of the school is to produce dedicated, efficient and God-fearing future leaders equipped with sound knowledge, wisdom and understanding - men and women who will have the capability to change the mindset of their generation in order to have them believe that what their predecessors could not achieve, they can,' she said.

'We are desirous to train a generation that would accept that no matter how deprived one's background is, with determination, discipline and devotion any goal set for one's self will become a reality to enable the individual be beneficial to himself, community and the nation'.

She said the transformation of the School by its Management increased their enrollment from 92 pupils to 105 in the last term.

Mrs Dzang, for her part, expressed excitement that the School had come back to life and it was poised to produce scholars, efficient, dedicated and God-fearing leaders.

The School was established by the couple to assist children from poor backgrounds to develop their potentials through quality education.

Vice Admiral Matthew Quashie, a former Chief of Defence Staff and Rear Admiral M. M. Tahiru, a former Commandant of the Military Academy and Training Schools (MATS), were there to celebrate the occasion.

Rear Admiral Dzang, who died in 2009, was born at Nandom in the Upper West Region of Ghana.

He served as a Chief of Naval Staff of the Ghana Navy and became a Secretary of State for Defence.

He was also an Ambassador to Japan with concurrent accreditation to the Commonwealth of Australia, Papua New Guinea, Singapore, South Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Indonesia, the Philippines, Brunei Darussalam and Thailand.
