Geological Survey Department needs to be resourced - Dr Boamah
Accra, Mar. 15, GNA - Dr Daniel Boamah, Acting Head of the Geological Survey Department (GSD), has said his Department needs adequate resources to enable them map out all fault zones.
He said with adequate resources, flood-prone areas could be mapped out with the information being simplified and disseminated to help educate and create awareness to prevent disasters.
Dr Boamah, speaking at a meeting with members of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Mines and Energy, said Accra and some parts of Southern and South Eastern Ghana sat on an active geological fault zones that released stored energy many times in a year.
The meeting formed part of the Committee's oversight responsibilities to meet its agencies to discuss their activities for the year.
He said in the event of a major earthquake, the vulnerability of the populations are all pointers to disastrous consequences and same could be said of the periodic flooding that plagued Accra and some parts of the country.
Dr Boamah said with equal risks of potential for occurrence and the vulnerability of the population being present, occurrence of minor events could trigger disastrous consequences due to the generally unprepared plans or the absence of effective mitigation measures.
Alhaji Amadu B. Sorogho, Chairman of the Select Committee, said the GSD was very important when it comes to identifying the country's natural resources, yet it had not been adequately resourced over the years.
