Challenges Facing Metro Mass Transit Ltd And The Way Forward
We the Coalition For Integrity In Governance (COFIIG), wish to bring to the attention of Ghanaians the current challenges facing the Metro Mass Transit Ltd (MMT), the reasons for its current poor state, and the way forward for MMT.
First and foremost, we call on the President of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, to urgently constitute the Board of Directors of the Metro Mass Transit Ltd (MMT) to ensure the smooth running of the company. Metro Mass Transit Ltd (MMT) has been operating over the last six months without a Board of Directors, a situation which is illegal and inimical to the effective running and growth of the company. The implication of this dire situation is that, no high level decisions can or are being made regarding the operations of the MMT.
It is worth noting that, as of the year 2010, the MMT had about 1,500 buses running throughout the country but currently, only about 500 buses are in good working condition. The company therefore, needs its board and senior management in place to be able to advise and make strategic operational decisions to ensure its profitability.
It is very worrying to note that the MMT is currently being mismanaged as staff who had been dismissed in the past as result of malpractices have suddenly found their way back into the company. This development does not motivate the committed and hardworking staffs who have been very diligent with their duties over the years.
We call on the Minister of Transport to call on the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) to institute urgent investigations into the activities of MMT, especially its procurement processes which has led to the purchase and supply of inferior spare parts leading to frequent break down of the buses, thereby causing financial loss at the company. We believe such an investigation will to the arrest of these unscrupulous and unpatriotic people behind these activities at the MMT.
