Upper East Gets Education Director
Upper East Dir. of Education, Mr. Zumakpe
A substantive Regional Director of Education, Emmanuel Zumakpe has been appointed for the Upper East region after months of appeals by concerned groups to the Ministry of Education.
Before his appointment, Mr. Zumakpe was the Bongo District Director of Education, where he was said to have put some measures in place to improve the performance of students at the basic level.
He was among some qualified persons who took part in an interview for the position in December 2013.
For reasons best known to some powerbrokers in the education Sector, none of the candidates was selected, and the former Upper East Regional Director of Education, Paul Apanga had to act as the Director for Upper East region for about six months even though he had been transferred to the Northern region as the substantive Northern Regional Director of Education.
It is an open secret that there were deliberate efforts by some self-centered persons to ensure that Upper East region would be without a substantive Director of Education till 2015.
Over the years, Upper East region has had various education directors in acting capacity.
Members of the concerned groups were of the view that the time has come for the region to have a substantive regional education director to authoritatively put in place measures to improve the performance of students at all levels of education.
Mr. Zumakpe endeared himself to the people of Garu-Tempane in the Upper East region for the role he played in reducing absenteeism among teachers.
He also ensured that Circuit Supervisors moved to the field to discharge their duties.
DAILY GUIDE's source at Ghana Education Service hinted that there was malfeasance in the Service.
The Upper East Regional Minister, Dr. Ephraim Avea Nsoh, upon assumption of office from the Upper West region in April 2014, promised to ensure that Upper East region gets a substantive Director of Education in two months' time.
Apart from ensuring judicious use of state funds at the GES in the Upper East region, Mr. Zumakpe would also be expected to improve education.
