The Police Needs Our Support To Help Maintain Peace And Order
In view of the actions needed to be taken to stem the tide of crimes and political upheavals by the Ghana Police Service, this institution need moral support from us to keep the peace in Ghana. They have all the men and equipment yet the police hierarchy have been going round to whip up support and cooperation from religious bodies and civil societies towards peace building in these trying moments.
They are doing this because without their uniforms they know they are our brothers and sisters', our mums and dads and they have a duty to live up to their calling to keep us safe.
However we tend to misunderstand some of their actions largely because of their culture of colonial enforcement which has remained with them although we are independent. When we say they are bad. They say they are not. Yet, for some time now, corruption perception studies, undertaken by some organizations find a few of them wanting.
Like all humans they have weaknesses which they take steps to put right. Some of them appear to enjoy receiving presents as happens to all especially during festivities, according to our customs and traditions. However sometimes they go beyond bounds for making 'uncalled for' demands.
Yet they carry out their duties dragging into the custody the 'bad nuts' in society including their own. A few of those arrested often escape in court through legal loopholes. To explain their situation regarding how they are perceived they simply say 'all animals do run freely but when cattle run they are considered crazy' meaning everyone does similar things they do yet theirs are considered not right.
When communities are under physical attacks they take initiative by reacting in equal measure to maim or kill. Consequently they suffer mixed reactions from sections of the society some of those who make disparaging statements about them.
They then find themselves confused and affixed between 'the 'Devil and the deep blue sea'. They then are at a loss as to whether to continue taking actions, especially when confronted with real threats to the lives of the people and themselves.
Though they've succeeded in seizing the bull by the horns in taming some of 'the evil ones' in towns and villages, they still get confused. Some legal brains and human right activists do advise them to stop shooting people even when they themselves come under attack.
To the good citizens who care, we must Stop cursing but pray for them and advise them if we can for they are our own kith and kin who are doing their duties to God and country.
Remember that sometimes they (the police) are used and abused by powers that be. We are told they have got enhanced new pay just as others have. However they are considered cedi millionaires
As evidence shows, they spend a lot on food, clothing and shelter and support for their wards in schools rendering them low on cash. They hardly go borrowing.
Yes their job is to investigate everyone, including close ones who are also potential suspects and threat to mother Ghana. Sometimes they spend their cash to do the job for us. They do suffer verbal attacks for being steadfast and in spite of doing so well the police lack well deserved attention.
They follow 'regimental' orders. Though their services are indispensable their homes are just not spacious and presentable. With their rooms not large, their corridors are used to keep fridges and other items often at the mercy of the weather.
Their kitchens are nothing to write home about. With regards to their walls they need to be washed.
They still appear in black woolen suits that are not suitable for the warm weather. Yet those who must know better have left things as they are as bequeathed to the nation by our colonial masters.
Let's go to their aid brothers and sisters. They cannot embark on upheavals. If they do they cannot have their men to police them. The police to guide the police is a task that can't just be done and they cannot allow the military or private security to police them.
Let's help them to help themselves. They are here to help build a secure nation. Come rain or shine and even if confronted by guns wielded by crooks and plans devised by tricksters they must survive.
From this moment onward let's make a pledge to help them not only by government but the corporate world for they are our own in uniforms; we wish to end with this quote;
'To those people policing our nation to keep all of us safe, we must help them out of their predicament to be able to intensify their duties of keeping us secure and safe'
