One-million Bible project ends in northern sector
More than 80,000 junior high school (JHS) pupils in the Brong Ahafo Region have benefited from the free distribution of bibles by the Bible Society of Ghana (BSG), under the One-million Bible Project.
According to Rev. Charles Adu Twumasi, Northern Sector Manager of the Bible Society of Ghana, the project was initiated by the society to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Ghana's independence in the year 2007. It was also aimed at exposing the youth to the word of God in order to transform them into worthy ambassadors of Christ and responsible citizens in future.
Rev. Twumasi also said more than GH¢8 million was spent on the project throughout the country.
At a special thanksgiving service held at the Christ the King Cathedral in Sunyani to mark the end of the project in the northern sector, Most Rev. Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi, Catholic Bishop of the Sunyani Diocese, urged Ghanaians to promote good neighbourliness at all times.
He said just as God loved all mankind and sacrificed his precious son Jesus Christ for the salvation and redemption of man, so Ghanaians must exhibit love for each other.
Bishop Gyamfi explained that a neighbour was one who identified a need and provided it for the good of others. He, therefore, commended the BSG for thinking about the spiritual, physical and intellectual well-being of Ghanaian youth and responding positively to them.
The Catholic Bishop also appealed to individuals, churches, institutions and corporate bodies to support the BSG in its efforts at making bibles available and affordable to all Ghanaians at all times.
Mr Francis Antwi Boasiako, Deputy Director of Education, who represented the Brong Ahafo Regional Director of Education, advised the recipients to read the bible, apply it diligently in their daily activities and make a difference in their homes, schools, churches and the general society.
He also praised the BSG for the wonderful initiative and laudable gesture and urged Ghanaians to lend their support in kind and cash to enable the society operate effectively.
Other dignitaries who graced the occasion included: Most Rev. Dr Festus Yeboah Asuamah, Anglican Bishop of the Sunyani Diocese and Chairman of the Local Council of Churches; Rev. Fr. William Kyere, the Administrator of the Christ the King Cathedral; Mr Nathaniel Nunoo, Special Duties Manager of the BSG, as well as the heads of some of the beneficiary JHSs in the Sunyani municipality.
