Viagra Kills Male Sex Organ–Medical Expert Warns
A medical expert, Dr. Senyo Misroame, says the use of Viagra as a stimulant for sexual performance can damage male organs.
According to him, Viagra which was made to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) can leave dire consequences on the male genital when used as an aphrodisiac, because of the side effects that comes with its abuse.
This caution comes at a time many men are resorting to Viagra to make them sexually active for long hours.
'It is unfortunate that some people have resorted to the use of Viagra for recreational purposes. You know it is the fantasy of most young men to be able to show off their sexual prowess by going long hours during sex.
'For this reason, some people choose to use Viagra which is really bad,' Dr. Misroame, specialist obstetrician and gynecologist lamented in an interview with The Independent.
Dr. Senyo cautioned men who used Viagra aside from ED purposes, saying there are putting their health at risk since the drug could cause Priapism (a state of sustained erection for more than an hour) which could kill the penile tissues of the penis thereby 'killing the penis' in the long run.
He explained, since the drug opens up the blood vessels in the penis to allow the tissues engorge blood (to enable erections), prolonged erections could expand the tissues and damage them; thereby affecting the penis.
The medical expert also hinted, people with heart and sight issues (and were ignorant) were at risk of having severe heart and sight complications if the abuse Viagra.
He advised young men to seek medical advice before using Viagra adding, even cases of ED could be treated with better techniques other than the use of Viagra.
Checks by The Independent have shown that Viagra which is supposed to be doctor's prescription is being sold as an 'off the counter' (without a doctor's prescription) drug in some pharmacy shops across the country.
Prices range between GH¢6 (Indian brand) and GH¢28 (American brand).
According to some Medical Counter Assistants (MCAs) in some pharmacies in Accra, patronage is on the high as young men purchase the drug on a daily basis.
Viagra is the trade name for Sildenafil Citrate, a drug which is used to treat Erectile Dysfunction (ED); a medical situation that occurs in men.
Viagra helps a man have an erection by helping his penis fill with blood. However, Viagra alone cannot cause an erection. The man needs to become sexually aroused, such as through sexual activity with a partner.
