WHAT IS THE GHANAIAN DREAM, DO WE EVEN HAVE ONE?
I have always heard many countries and their leaders proclaim, the dream of the countries they lead. I have heard people say this is the American Dream, I have heard people say this is the Italian, Brazilian, Egyptian dream, and so on and so forth.
While the above proclamations may just be mere words, I think that it will actually do us as a country a lot of good if we were to have a dream. Everyman dreams, it is good to dream because dreams when taken seriously bring great results. There are others who just dream without taking action, but when there is a collective dream, although not all those involved may take it serious, those who are determined to see the good side of life will surely take it and run with it.
The development of every organization when left in the hands of the few may never grow to serve the larger interest of all the people involve. That is the problem of our country Ghana.
Wouldn't it be great to be told that this is the GHANAIAN DREAM? A dream carved by the people of Ghana for themselves? A dream that is representative enough and has taken into consideration the aspirations of the people? A dream that is not just the product of one political party but the people of Ghana?
We have a constitution that has provided the basis on which every system should be regulated but the constitution is not enough to propel us into the level of development and growth that is befitting a 21st century Ghana. We must carve a dream that will take care our challenges and successes.
We must be bold enough to pass through the same process that we passed in writing our constitution in order to get A NATIONAL DEVELOPMENTAL AGENDA for our country. It is actually long overdue. We must not leave the destiny of our country in the hands of the few politicians we have in this country, we must all make an input into what must be used as the benchmark for the forward march of our noble country. What do we want to live for the next generation? We must factor all that into the Ghanaian Dream. That is how countries develop; they are built by the efforts of everyone involved not just the few.
The issue of political parties being tied to one system as a result of A NATIONAL DEVELOPMENTAL AGENDA is neither here nor there because if we get that done, it is going to regulate the entire system of our country including the political parties and the people who work for them.
Are we saying that if we get an agenda that everyone is made to contribute to, people will feel left out? Why can't we get all political parties, civil societies, religious bodies, the media, as well as individuals on board, to work together in shaping an agenda that will regulate every political party and every institution on what we want to see or have as a people in a progressive democratic country? Why can't we get a lasting dream that will help all of get much involve in building our country for our generation and those yet unborn?
If we get A NATIONAL DEVELOPMENTAL AGENDA for this country, what will then be required from all political parties that will seek the mandates of the people, will be to tell us the strategies they will use in making our collective dreams a reality. For instance if in the NATIONAL DEVELOPMENTAL AGENDA it is stated that in 4 years time, looking at the growing needs of our country, we should have 6 regional hospitals, 3 public universities, and so on and so forth, what will be required of politicians and their parties will be to convince the people as at how they will raise money for such projects, sources of such monies, nature of such projects, how much each will cost and the timeline for the completion of such projects, if plan A didn't work this is plan B etc. In that sense people will know those who have the most pragmatic systems in place to lead us on the right path to realizing our dream.
We cannot continue to mortgage the future of this country in the hands of the few, we must rise and get things done, for Ghana belongs to all of us. We are all in this together, this is our country, it is mother Ghana, we are those who must call for this and make it happen, we may all be paddling different canoes but we are all going to the same destination.
There are others who will not see the need for it, but we must call for a national debate on this at every level, because this when done will do us more good than all that we have done so far, because all we have done since the return to democratic governance has been, leaving the destiny of this whole country in the hands of the few.
We must not continue like this. We must all rise and be counted.
