THIS DAY IN HISTORY: 14th October 1919
Marcus Garvey, founder of the Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League (UNIA-ACL), was the victim of an assassination attempt when George Tyler, an African-American from southern America entered Garvey's office with a revolver and fired four shots, wounding Garvey in the right leg and scalp. Garvey's wife, Amy Ashwood, knocked Tyler to the floor, saving Garvey's life.
Tyler claimed that he was sent to kill Garvey by the Assistant District Attorney of New York, Edwin P. Kilroe. Tyler allegedly committed suicide the day after shooting Garvey.
