Guinness Ghana Goes Green

Guinness Ghana Breweries Ltd (GGBL), Ghana's leading beverage company has stated that it is committed to meeting the needs of customers in an environmentally sound and sustainable manner.

It maintained that it had over the years demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement, and compliance with all applicable legislation and internal Diageo standards and prevention of pollution in all its operations and activities.

During this financial year alone, GGBL invested GHC15 million in environmental sustainability projects.

These were disclosed by Supply Director of GGBL, Steve Waters added: 'The environment is key to our business as all major components of our production are derived from it. This is why at GGBL we have set clear objectives and action points to ensure that we mitigate our environmental impact'.

To achieve this, GGBL had implemented projects in environmental sustainability.

The major success story this year had been around water usage in the Achimota brewery which reduced considerably.

Effluent Treatment Plants had also been upgraded at both breweries in Kaase and Achimota to treat water before discharge to support aquatic life.

In addition, since 2007, the company's community investment project in Water of Life had been committed to delivering access to safe drinking water to deprived communities and people across Ghana.

GGBL, Ghana's only beverage company listed on the Ghana Stock Exchange, is a subsidiary of Diageo Plc, the world's leading premium drinks business.

Diageo and its subsidiaries including GGBL are also committed to reducing packing weight by an average of 10%, making all packaging 100% recyclable or reusable where possible as well as removing materials which are potentially a risk to the environment.

In a regional message, the President of Diageo Africa, Mr. Nick Blazquez said, 'E mployees across our business in Africa and around the world, will today be taking part in a variety of activities to celebrate the day and recognise the importance of this agenda for us in our journey to becoming a truly sustainable business.'

GGBL will continue to support the country in its effort to achieve the Millenium Development Goal of Environmental Sustainability.
