Dansoman residents spend Sunday repairing what Saturday rainstorm damaged
Accra, May 20, GNA – Most residents in the southern part of Dansoman, Accra's suburb, swapped church services for an unusual job- repairing damages caused by Saturday's rainstorm which hit Accra leaving in its wake several damaged properties.
Affected communities included Glefe, Gbegbeyise, Mpoase, Opetekwei, Shiabu and Ebenezer Down area.
Some were spotted busily repairing broken wooden kiosks while others were restoring their roofs which had been ripped off by the rainstorm that lasted barely an hour.
Cynthia, a mother of two, told the Ghana News Agency that she had to mob, clean and keep wake during the entire Saturday night because the corrugated sheet roof of their house was torn and airlifted by the storm.
“We had to buy roofing sheets this morning (Sunday) to repair the roof as well as the backyard kitchen housed in a wooden structure.
Those, whose homes were not damaged by rainstorm, had to mop and sweep the dust and debris left behind by the tempest.
Nana, a married young man and a father of two daughters, narrated his near death experience to the GNA.
He was driving from Mamprobi to his residence in Dansoman when the storm emerged.
Nana said he could barely see anything beyond his front windscreen and when he looked behind his car, all that he could see were polythene materials, twigs and stones in the air as the storm lashed and tore though buildings, vehicles and kiosks.
I decided to park my car for a while but an overhead electric wire violently ripped off a pole few metres behind me sending a spiral of fireworks which illuminated the beclouded sky
Nana added that after that narrow escape, his car was hit at the rear by a branch of a falling almond tree.
The unexpected storm that swept the entire coastal belt of Accra late Saturday afternoon with rapidity reportedly ripped off several roofs and pulled down several bill boards.
The situation was said to have obstructed traffic flow in some areas of the Accra Metropolis.
Residents in areas including Spintex Road, Madina, Ashale Botwe, Weija Barrier, Dome, Achimota, Asylum Down, Dansoman and Odorkor were reported to have experienced electrical power cut before and several hours after the downpour, deepening the mystery of the storm.
