CEPS took bribe from us

Mr. George Blankson

THE Office of the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) in Sekondi-Takoradi, last Sunday, arrested five Nigerians for possession of unaccustomed sacks containing wax prints, electrical gadgets, female underwear and suiting materials among others.

he five Nigerians are alleged to have connived with officials of the Customs Excise and Preventive Service (CEPS) to under invoice the items.

The leader of the group, Issah Abdul, told BNI officials and newsmen that they connived with the officials of CEPS at the Aflao Border to bring in the items, without paying the required duty.

The leader also added that they paid an amount of GH¢1,200 to bribe their way through at the various checkpoints, until they were eventually arrested by the BNI at Shama last Sunday.

The suspects, who are in police custody, are Mustapha Assah, Sulley Muhammed, Munkaila Ibrahim and Musah Idah. A Benz bus with registration number AS 5029X, which transported the items from Aflao to Shama, has also been impounded by the BNI.

The cost of the items is unknown, as the CEPS officials invited to value them have still not turned up, raising suspicion about their complicity.

Meanwhile, the Western Regional Minister, Mr. Paul Evans Aidoo, who was at the office of the BNI to inspect the unaccustomed items, told newsmen that since CEPS had been implicated, he had charged the police to take inventory of the items to assess their value.
