More than 360 Togolese refugees flee to Ghana

Dundoni, (N/R), Sept. 13, GNA - Three-hundred and sixty one Togolese refugees have fled from the Republic of Togo into the Zabzugu/Tatale District of the Northern Region following a dispute between two feuding factions over land.

One person is reportedly dead with about 10 seriously injured.

The dispute is between the Bikaachib and Biyakpabe clans of the Bassare tribe.

According to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) officials, 50 adult males, 90 adult females, 91 male children and 130 female children had so far been registered at the Dundoni Community, which is one of the refugee camps.

Meanwhile, reports reaching NADMO indicate that more refugees continue to stream into the Nachamb and Kparibatabu communities, all in the Zabzugu/Tatale District.

Meanwhile, Alhaji Abdulai Mahama Silimboma, Northern Regional Coordinator of NADMO, some NADMO officials, security personnel, staff of the Zabzugu/Tatale District Assembly and some reporters on Monday visited the refugee camp to assess the situation and present some relief items to them.

The relief items presented to the refugees included: bags of maize and rice, used clothing, mattresses, some buckets and cups.

Presenting the items to them, Alhaji Silimboma told them that under the laws of the UN conventions they had the right to seek refuge in Ghana and assured them of their safety.

He, however, cautioned them not to transport the conflict into Ghana but rather strive to live in peace and harmony with the people in the communities and also report any threats to their lives to the security agencies.

He also urged them to cooperate with health officials who would vaccinate them against the spread of diseases.

Alhaji Silimboma appealed to other UN agencies and NGOs to go to the aid of the refugees.

Mr Joedin Wajah, Spokesperson for the refugees, thanked NADMO for the relief items and also commended the people of Ghana for accepting them and promised that they would comport themselves.
