NADMO Sends More Relief Items To Atiwa, Fanteakwa
More relief items have been distributed by the Eastern Regional Office of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to flood victims in the Atiwa and Fanteakwa districts in the Eastern Region.
While flood victims in the Fanteakwa District received 200 poly mats, five bales of used cloths and 50 mattresses, those in the Atiwa District benefited from 100 foam mattresses, 50 poly mats, a carton of toilet soap, two cartons of washing soap, 20 lanterns, large quantities of second-hand cloths and 100 plastic plates and cups.
About 10 hours of rain in the two districts on Monday left 105 farmers stranded on their farms and rendered 900 people homeless.
The rain, which caused the River Sea in the area to overflow its banks, flooded other streams and rivers such as the River Birim.
The flood waters also blocked access roads, including the Anyinam-Nkawkaw portion of the Accra-Kumasi highway.
The Eastern Regional Director of NADMO, Mr Ransford Owusu Buakye, who supervised the distribution of the relief items, said the organisation had to quickly respond to the needs of the victims to alleviate their suffering.
He said additional relief items, including tents, would soon be delivered to the two assemblies for distribution to the flood victims who had been asked to move to higher grounds to avert future floods.
He also said reports being received from Maame Krobo in the Kwahu North District (Afram Plains) indicated that about 30 houses had collapsed due to the floods and that NADMO was preparing to go to the rescue of the victims.
