Youth For Nduom 2012 Committee Formed
A group of youth working for Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom, the 2008 presidential candidate of the People’s Convention Party (CPP) has stated that Ghanaians are disappointed and fed up with the unfulfilled promises by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Consequently, it said Ghanaian voters were yearning for a real change to come from a person like Dr Nduom who had developed the knack for solving intractable problems.
A spokesperson for the group, Nii Amarh Nkunim, stated this at a press conference to announce the formation of the group, “Youth for Nduom 2012 Exploratory Committee’’ which had been commissioned by Dr Nduom to undertake an exploration to assess the viability of his intention to contest the 2012 general election as a presidential candidate .
“We believe that giving power to responsible, knowledgeable and experienced leaders in Ghana is a prerequisite for the accelerating of the development of the nation. In the past, Ghanaians have been voting on the basis of partisan politics, ethnic inclination, geographical nearness to candidate and even religious affiliation’, Nii Nkunim added.
He said the association believed that the exercise of one’s franchise must be based on the candidate’s credibility, knowledge in governance, experience, sound policies, ideas and the ability to deliver.
He cited instances from other developed countries such as the US and the UK where voters had selected their leaders based on the capability of such people to solve their problems and urged Ghanaians, especially the youth, to do the same.
According to Nii Nkunim, the outcome of the research by the team will be the basis for the kind of methods and strategies to be adopted for the 2012 campaign.
This, he said, had become imperative due to what pertained in the 2008 elections, where most Ghanaians accepted Dr Nduom’s call for change, but voted for Prof. J.E.A Mills due to the perception that the NDC was big enough to win and make change possible.
“What Dr Nduom actually called for during the 2008 electioneering is not what the NDC Administration led by Prof. Mills is delivering.
He wanted change that could be felt in the people’s pockets. A change that ensured social justice by speedily providing massive infrastructure that supported the delivery of excellent public service in the area of water, electricity, health, housing, education and employment.’’
He explained that the research team would employ all scientific means including questionnaire, interviews, media reports, social sites on the Internet and observation and added that they would also resort to the use of focus group discussions to solicit first-hand information from various professionals, religious, community, youth and student groups for their assessment of the candidature of
Dr Nduom and their willingness to vote for him in 2012.
Nii Nkunim noted that the group would also solicit views from CPP members who were qualified to vote at the party’s congress as well as ordinary party members.
