140 GIA Workers To Go

Gifty E. Annan-Myers - Ag. CEO, GIA

The Board of Directors of Ghana International Airlines (GIA) will soon ask 140 staff members to vacate their posts.

This decision was reached recently after GIA's board of directors, led by the chairman, Albert Botchway, reviewed the operations of the company and its financial standing, a statement issued by the board has stated.

The board explained that it would maintain a small number of staff to keep the company running particularly as it seeks assistance from Government to refund monies to some 9,000 GIA ticket holders who got stranded recently.

Since its inception, the airline has not been able to sustain its operations and continues to grapple with numerous operational challenges, hence the decision to forestall further delays in payment of salaries.

“Since the company cannot pay its staff, it cannot maintain the 168 personnel on its payroll,” the statement said.

The board has therefore expressed gratitude to affected persons for their forbearance. Also, the board said it was working out all the necessary processes in order to notify the Chief Labour Officer and engage the Industrial and Commercial Workers Union (ICU) on the welfare of affected personnel.
