Kotoko Ban 'Juju'
THE NEWLY appointed Kotoko board, led by K.K. Sarpong, will not tolerate the use of African voodoo, known in local parlance as 'juju', in the club next season, a member of the board has stated.
Wilberforce Mfum said, “Juju doesn't play football; therefore the new board, of which I am a member, would not spend a dime from the club's resources on matters of juju.”
Mr. Mfum, a former Kotoko livewire, made these remarks in an interview with Sometimer Otuo Acheampong of Kessben FM in Kumasi on Thursday.
There are rumours that Kotoko's past managements usually expend huge sums of the club's money on 'juju' to help the club win their matches. Recently there were wild speculations that Kotoko management spent close to about GH¢100,000 on 'juju' last season, even though the club struggled to make an impact in the league, finishing outside the top four.
Mr. Mfum, who is representing the old players of Kotoko, on the board, indicated that “it is through hard work and dedication on the part of players that Kotoko can regain its old form which made it a household name on the continent.”
He indicated that he does not believe in 'juju'; so he suggested that “Kotoko fans that believe in 'juju' can do so with their own monies but not from the club's coffers.”
Mr. Mfum stated that monies that would be used on 'juju,' could be channeled to the construction of the club's own stadium, buying training kits and motivating the players to deliver the goods on the pitch.
For the Porcupine Warriors to be successful next season, the former Kotoko striker noted that discipline should be given priority, stressing, “Kotoko should not hesitate to sack indisciplined players from the team.”
