Ghana Eye World Cup Trophy
THE SENIOR national team the Black Stars are hoping to win the upcoming FIFA World Cup taking place in South Africa from June 11 to July 11.
Ghana Football Association (GFA) Boss Kwesi Nyantakyi said the four-time Africa champions are aiming to become the first African country to win the golden trophy this year.
After gaining some experience in their maiden appearance at the Germany 2006 World Cup, he said Ghana are now experienced enough to win the ultimate in world football in South Africa.
“Ghana desires to win the FIFA World Cup in South Africa ,” President Nantakyi said to rapturous cheers at a highly attended press conference in Accra last Monday.
Jointly organized by the GFA and the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the conference was to discuss Ghana's preparations towards the impending World Cup.
“The Black Stars are not going to play second fiddle to any country at the World Cup,” he emphatically stated, adding that the West Africans are not going to add to the numbers at the highly competitive tournament.
According to him, with top notch stars like Michael Essien, Sulley Muntari and John Paintsil, who play actively in Europe, it is possible that Ghana can conquer the world this year.
“Ghana doesn't deserve to be ranked as second rate country; we are going for the ultimate and surely we will win the trophy,” said the confident-looking Mr. Nyantakyi.
He indicated that his administration has the firm belief that Ghana can lift aloft the World Cup this year and so they are planning towards achieving that great aim. The GFA President thus implored the teeming football supporters to rally behind the senior national team so as to enable they bring honour to Mother Ghana.
