Barekese Dam Expansion works near completion
Expansion works at the Barekese and Owabi Water Treatment Dams in the Ashanti Region is expected to be completed by the end of this month. The project is currently more than 96 percent complete while an electric transformer, a major component of the work has been installed at the Achiase Booster Station.
The expansion work costing about 37 million dollars began in 2007 and was initially expected to be completed last month. The Ashanti Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Water Company Limited, Haruna Asoga told Radio Ghana that the Barekese and Owabi Dams are expected to produce a total of 27 million gallons of water a day.
Mr. Asoga explained that on completion of the expansion works, all communities in the Kumasi Metropolis, especially those which were cut off due to the low water production will be reconnected. In addition, adjoining communities such as Ejisu Ahwiaa, Ofoase Kokoben, Fawoade and Trabuom will directly receive water from the Dams.
