BOLGATANGA-BASED Upper East United have managed to beat their arch-rivals Juventus FC, also based in Bolgatanga, by two goals to one, on the opening day of the on-going Division One League (DOL).

Upper East United, formerly known as Catholic Stars, scored the first goal in the 37th minute through Awal Abubakari; but shortly after the opener, Juventus equalized through Ayambiri Baba.

Lack of stamina on the side of the Juventus players led to the second goal for Upper East United through in the 53rd minute of the game.

Upper East United is supported by the Upper East Regional Coordinating Council, spearheaded by the Upper East Regional Minister, Mark Woyongo, with the aim of ensuring that the Upper East region gets a team in the Glo Premier League before it celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2010.

The two local teams entered into the match with high expectations and respect for each other, knowing very well their individual pedigrees as far as the Zone One-A Division One League was concerned.

Upper East United Coach, Mumuni Gamel, was impressed with the performance of his players and gave the assurance that he would get them to work harder to ensure they sustain their winning ways in the Division One League.

The coach said he was not intimidated at all by the insults and noise being made by the supporters of Juventus FC during and after the match. On his part, coach of Juventus, Stephen Abugri, expressed the hope that his boys will win their home match on Wednesday 23rd November 2009, when they meet Bazooka FC from Wa in the Upper West region.
