PM appeals to people to show interest is assembly elections
November 30, 2009
Nkoranza (B/A), Nov. 30, GNA - Mr. Isaac Asirifi-Kudom, Presiding Member of the Nkoranza South District Assembly, has appealed to the electorate to closely examine candidates for the 2010 district assembly and unit committee elections to ensure they are committed to serve the communities.
He also appealed to the youth to shun being influenced with bribes and gifts from the candidates to sell their votes to avoid voting for wrong candidates.
Sharing his views on next year's district assembly elections in an interview with the Ghana News Agency at Nkoranza at the weekend, Mr. Asirifi-Kudom noted with concern the inability of successful candidates to carry out their responsibilities as assembly and unit committee members
He said some unit committees had become defunct because their members had refused to serve the people whilst some assembly members had also failed to sensitize the people about local governance so they would support the assemblies.
"There is the need for the electorate to ensure that the people they will elect will be ready to serve them and not to be served", the presiding member said and advised against politicizing the concept.
Mr. Asirifi-Kudom appealed to women of at least basic education standard to file nomination to contest in the two elections to ensure their fair representation in the assemblies and unit committees.
The Nkoranza South District Assembly has presented 50 bags of cement to support an on-going police station project at Akuma in the district.
Mr. Emmanuel Kwadwo Agyekum, District Chief Executive who presented the items, said the donation was in appreciation of the efforts of the people and to encourage them to sustain their self-help spirit.
He said the government appreciated the efforts of communities that initiated development programmes and called on other communities to follow the "shining example" for the speedy development of the district.
Mr. Ahmed Gyabaah, Assembly Member for the area, expressed appreciation for the support and said the people would spend about 35,000 Ghana cedis on the project through individual contributions, fund raising harvests and communal labour.
He also commended Kwabre Rural Bank Limited for presenting 100 bags of cement towards the project that is nearing completion and would be inaugurated next year.
