The Eastern Regional Branch of the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU), of the Ghana Police Service, recorded about 270 cases on sexual harassment and other marital cases during the first and third quarters of this year. This was followed by criminal abortion and indecent assaults.
The Eastern Regional Correspondent Clerk of DOVVSU, Detective Lance Corporal Bright Ameyibor made this known in an interview with Radio Ghana in Koforidua.
He said DOVVSU aims at investigating juvenile offences, child delinquency and offences relating to couples.
Lance Corporal Ameyibor said the Unit prosecutes cases when necessary adding that, they also make sure that the victim goes through counseling and Social Welfare to arbitrate for settlement.
He said the Unit needs more offices and personnel to help work and fight against Domestic Violence.
Lance corporal Ameyibor urged government to come to their aid with funds and means of transport to enable them to support victims who come from remote areas to report their cases.
He said the Unit depends on FIDA, Social Welfare, CHRAJ, for shelter and financial support from UNICEF, the United Nations Population Fund and Ark Foundation.
He advised victims to report cases to the police station, Assemblymen, Social Welfare as well as Unit Committees.
