GBC Establishment Decree226 Outmoded – DDG

The Deputy Director – General of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, Mr. Kwabena Sarpong- Anane, is of the conviction that the Corporation can only assume its mandate as a Public Broadcaster if its activities are fully funded by the public.

Presently, the Corporation can only be called a State Broadcaster since its activities are not fully funded by the public.

Dr. Kwabena Sarpong- Anane was speaking with the Staff of Radio Savanna in Tamale. The meeting was part of the Deputy Director – General's visit to the region.

According to him, the Corporation is operating under the NLCD Decree 226 which he said is outmoded. The Corporation runs many commercial adverts on its network because it needs internally generated funds to operate some of its activities.

He disclosed that the proposal has been forwarded to Cabinet to increase TV License fees ranging from 10 to 20 Ghana Cedis.

Mr. Sarpong Anane said Public Broadcasting all over the world is being funded by the public and Ghanaians should take up the challenge.

He announced that the Corporation will soon go digital and no one will need a satellite dish to watch or listen to the Corporation's Programmes. He advised the Staff to be professional in their duties.

The Northern Regional Director of GBC, Abdul Razak Mohammed, expressed concern about the current state of the Transmitter at the Station. He said it now runs between 15 and 20 Kilowatts and appealed to Management of the Corporation to provide a new transmitter for the Station to enable it to reach out to the people in the region.
