Nungua faced with waste problem

Sanitation has been an age old problem in Ghana but seems to be worsening these days.  Residents in the Nungua area have had to live with the waste generated both at home and in public places as waste bins have not been emptied or a long time.  When Radio Ghana chanced upon the supervisor of the Waste Department of the Nungua sub-metropolitan office, Wradi Sitsilisi, he said, the problem is as a result of the closure of the Teshie compost plant where they used to dump waste.

He said the nearest available dumping site is at Abokobi but added that the distance and the poor nature of the road from Abokobi to the dumping site makes it difficult for a faster disposal of the waste.  According to Mr. Wradi, a waste truck could empty about fourteen waste bins a day but this has reduced to about two bins per truck per day.  He gave assurance that as soon as a new dumping is found all the refuse will be cleared.

On general sanitation of the area, he said the Waste Department has sanitary guards who are tasked to inspect the environment and educate residents on cleanliness.
