MINISTER ASSURES CONTINUITY OF GOV`T PROJECTS...But cautions against shoddy works

The Brong-Ahafo Regional Minister, Kwadwo Nyamekye Marfo, has given the assurance that in the spirit of continuity and national development, the current government would ensure the successful completion of all projects in the region.

According to Mr. Nyamekye Marfo, every project initiated by the previous government would be continued without any political consideration, therefore contractors should work assiduously for the rapid development of the country.

The Regional Minister gave the assurance when he inspected ongoing projects within the region. Some of the projects include the rehabilitation of the 60-kilometre Techiman-Kintampo trunk road, reconstruction of the 30-kilometre Techiman-Wenchi road, construction of a 3-storey Administration Block complex for the Kintampo South District, construction of a 2-storey District Police Headquarters at Jema, and construction of a 3-bedroom bungalow for the Jema Health Centre.

Mr. Nyamekye Marfo however, cautioned that though the government was in support of the projects, contractors who fail to go by the dictates of the contract would not be tolerated.

“Delays and shoddy works would not be accepted by this current government to the detriment of national development, therefore quality should be the hallmark of all contractors, to ensure an affable relationship with government,” he stressed.

Mr. Nyamekye Marfo, who was together with the Regional Director of Highways Ministry, Mr. Emmanuel Pireku, and the Regional Maintenance Manager, Mr. Charles Adubofuor, commended the contractors working on the Techiman-Kintampo trunk road and that of Techiman-Wenchi road, urging them to continue with the good works to meet the completion date of the contracts, and with the required standards.

He noted that the reconstruction of the Techiman-Kintampo road was important not only to the Brong-Ahafo Region, but to the West African sub-region.

On the rehabilitation of the 60-kilometre Techiman-Kintampo road by a Korean Construction Company, Sinyung, the residence engineer, Mr. William Owusu Banahene revealed that the contract price cost GH¢36,058,579.20, and was being funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB), Government of Ghana and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Fund. It would be completed in March 1, 2011.

The Resident Engineer however indicated that nine months after the commencement of the project on October 1, 2008, the financial progress of work is 5.03%, whilst the physical progress is 4.80%.

He revealed that the project had some social services to render with the construction, which includes provision of fence wall to some schools, markets and health centres along the road corridor.

Mr. Banahene added that there would be the provision of parking lots in some communities, and education programmes on malaria and HIV/AIDS awareness in some of the communities.
