Mills Rewards Tony Aidoo
After a long-standing, often abrasive campaign for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), it is payback time as President John Evans Atta Mills reciprocates the gestures of party loyalists such as Dr. Tony Aidoo, with the release of a new list of appointees.
Generally considered a hatchet-man for the NDC, Dr. Tony Aidoo is heading for the University of Ghana Council as a member whose abrasive tongue has earned for him, a certain notoriety or fame, depending on which side of the polarized political terrain one is.
Dr. Aidoo, a former Deputy Minister of Defence in the Jerry Rawlings administration, was said to have lobbied for the Foreign Affairs Minister portfolio, losing it, in the end, to Alhaji Mohammad Mumuni.
He was also linked to National Development Planning Commission (NDPC) as its Director General.
Dr. Aidoo was a Director of NDPC before he was appointed a deputy Defence Minister.
The list of personalities named for the boards is a mixed bag of the known and the relatively obscure. The list though contains names of high profile NDC supporters and members chosen from across the country with a little blend of statesmen.
Kyeretwie Opoku, a dyed-in-the-wool NDC character who defected to join Goosie Tanoh in forming the National Reform Party, has not been left out in the gravy train as he takes his seat on the board of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), where the President's brother has also picked a seat.
True to our prediction of a past edition, one of the Ahwois has been offered chairman of a board.
A statement issued from the Osu Castle and signed by Mahama Ayariga, Presidential Spokesman, named Ato Ahwoi, a power-broker at the Presidency, as GNPC Chairman. Earlier speculations had suggested that Mr. Ahwoi was going to SSNIT as its chairman.
The President has directed the trickling goodies towards his brother, Dr. Cadman Mills, who serves as a member on the cash-soaked Ghana National Petroleum Corporation Board, in the new list released yesterday.
The President's brother had earlier been appointed a member of the 10-team Economic Advisory Council (EAC).
