Transport Minister Tours Tema Harbour
The Minister of Transport, Mr Mike Hammah, has paid a working visit to the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority and the PSC Shipyard in Tema.
The visit was to enable him to familiarise himself with the activities of the agencies, find out about their plans and challenges, and also to share the vision of President John Evans Atta Mills with them.
Addressing the staff, Mr Hammah said the President recognised transport as one of the crucial sectors that would move the country's developmental agenda forward. That, he said, called for utmost attention and commitment from all industrial players.
He said there was the need for the transport sector to be adequately prepared for the oil find in the Western Region, as the nation's ports, particularly that of Takoradi, needed infrastructural upliftment to support the oil industry.
The acting Director-General of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, Mr Nestor Galley, said the authority was pursuing its aim of keeping the maritime gateways of Tema and Takoradi safe and effective in the service of Ghana and her sub-regional neighbours, particularly the land-locked countries.
Mr Galley said in pursuit of this, the GPHA had undertaken capacity improvements ,including new container terminal developments in Tema, three large transit warehouses in Takoradi, two new tugs to augment the marine fleet in Tema and Takoradi, and the new Golden Jubilee Terminal in Tema.
