NDC wild over Mills DCEs
Series of agitations have greeted Monday's announcement of names for the various Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executive positions by President John Evans Atta Mills.
The President has nominated 143 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives for nine out of the 10 regions for confirmation by their respective assemblies and subsequent appointment.
However, some of the nominees have been given a cold shoulder by National Democratic Congress (NDC) activists in their respective districts who alleged that they are not known.
Some of the districts with heightened agitations are the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), Adenta Municipal Assembly in the Greater Accra Region, Kwaebibrem District Assembly and Akuapem South Municipal Assembly in the Eastern Region among others.
The NDC youth in the Kwaibibrem district besieged and vandalized the party office in protest against the President's nominee, George Agyemang Duah.
According to reports monitored on Citi FM, chairs, tables, stationery and other office equipment were destroyed by the youth.
Executives at the party office had to flee for their lives as the youth had wanted to harm them.
The leader of the group, numbering over a thousand, Theophilus Annor Ampofo said their action stemmed from the President's inability to abide by his promised of running a transparent government.
He noted that the nomination of Mr. Agyemang Duah was inconsistent with that promise since the people in the district did not know who he was.
According to him, members of the Kade branch of the party had also declined knowledge of the activities of the President's nominee.
When asked why they chose to use vandalism as a means of voicing their displeasure, Mr. Theophilus Ampofo said they had tried on countless occasions to contact the hierarchy of the party but to no avail.
“The name which came out was not on the list of the 13 people who applied for the job,” he said, adding that the action showed that the “government is not ready to be transparent; the government is not ready to help those of us at the grassroots”.
Mr. Annor Ampofo said the group was ready to resign from the party if the “President does not listen to us and address our concerns,” and hinted that the group was going to embark on a protest march through the streets of Kade and Akwatia to voice their reservations about that President's nominee.
Interestingly, the Deputy Regional Minister, Baba Jamal comes from the district.
The former President and NDC founder, Jerry John Rawlings had warned at an NDC rally in Jirapa on Sunday that President Atta Mills would be in trouble if he selected wrong people for DCE positions.
Strangely, after the names had been announced, President Mills emplaned for a West African tour, hoping to return today.
