CPP won't take part in Jirapa bye-election

The Convention People's Party says it will not field a parliamentary candidate to contest for the bye-election in the Jirapa constituency.

The constituency seat became vacant following the demise of Edward K Salia a few weeks ago after losing his fight against cancer.

Kosi Dedey, Chairman of the Publicity Committee of the CPP, in a statement stated that the party has decided to focus on the reorganisation of the party structures and institutions instead of participating in the impending election.

According to him, the decision was taken to avoid a diversion of needed attention for the reorganization programme which remains the highest priority of the party.

To this end, Mr Dedey disclosed that the CPP was devoting more resources to building stronger organizational structures to ensure that the party was better prepared for future elections.

He has, therefore, advised members of the CPP to be steadfast and remain committed to the rebuilding of the party.

"The CPP"s agenda remains resolute, unique and independent. We will continue to hold faithfully to Nkrumaist ideals, and campaign stridently for alternative policies that address our socio-economic needs,' the statement noted.

The CPP Publicity Chairman urged his party members to assess the candidates contesting the bye-election and vote according to their conscience as to who will best represent the interest of the people of Jirapa and the country as a whole.

The CPP used the opportunity to express its condolence and sympathy to the family and friends of the late Salia.
