Farmer arrested for stealing Teak
The Abuakwa police have arrested one Kwaku Darko, a farmer of Nkonteng near Nkawie in the Atwima Nwabiagya district, for allegedly stealing 23 trees from a teak plantation belonging to Messrs Abdul Salaam Timbers Limited.
A highly placed police source told the GNA on Friday that the suspect had for some time now been terrorizing workers of the Company wielding a gun and machete, warning them not to enter the plantation since the land on which the trees had been planted belonged to his family.
The source said Darko's concern was that no proper documentation had been signed between the family and the company and that he would continue disturbing and preventing them from entering the farm.
It said, some time last week, the suspect harvested a number of the trees and managed to cart 23 of them to Messrs Byes and Ways Limited, a teak processing company at Mfensi also in the district for sale but luck eluded him when he was arrested by the Police upon a tip off.
The source indicated that, Darko who has since been granted bail would be put before court soon after investigations have been completed.
Meanwhile, the gun and the machete had been seized by the Police.
