Education Ministry meets GAUA, GTEC today to resolve university administrators strike

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu

The Ministry of Education has invited the leadership of the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) and the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to an urgent meeting on Monday, October 12, to resolve the ongoing strike by university administrators.

The strike stems from unresolved concerns over the conditions of service of university administrators, including disparities in allowances and other employment-related issues.

GAUA initially declared a nationwide strike on August 10, but suspended the action following engagements with Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu.

The association resumed the strike on October 6 after negotiations failed to produce the expected results.

The strike has disrupted administrative operations at some public universities, with the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) indefinitely postponing its scheduled reopening for the 2026/2027 academic year.

The University of Ghana, also in a statement dated October 10, announced a postponement of its reopening.

In a press statement dated Sunday, October 11, the Ministry said the meeting would focus on constructive dialogue to find an amicable resolution to the dispute.

“Government remains committed to addressing the concerns of organised labour through established negotiation mechanisms and constructive engagement,” the statement read in part.

The Ministry also urged the parties to approach the meeting in good faith, considering the impact of the strike on students, university communities and the broader national interest.

It further called on GAUA's leadership to use the meeting to work with relevant stakeholders towards an early resolution of the impasse.

“Government remains hopeful that the meeting will yield a positive outcome and facilitate a swift return to normal academic and administrative activities across affected tertiary institutions,” the statement added.
