Affordable Housing: A Private-Sector Pledge Meets a National Ambition
Alhaji Salamu Amadu, CEO of Afro-Arab Properties, has pledged his company's support for President John Dramani Mahama's drive to expand affordable housing. The Daily Guide front page of 12 October 2026 reports that he promised the President 200,000 houses. The company's own statements describe a longer-term commitment.
What was pledged
Alhaji Amadu told the President that if his wish is to be known as "John the Builder", he is ready to help build, and that Afro-Arab Properties has a vision of 200,000 homes across Ghana by 2050.
The company said it is ready to work with the government, financial institutions, development partners and other private-sector actors to speed up housing delivery. It also wants the homes to be sustainable and environmentally responsible.
A track record to build on
The 200,000-home target is not new. The company set it publicly in 2024 and was also named Affordable Luxury Real Estate Brand of the Year at the Ghana Property Awards that year. It is described as the first Ghanaian-owned real estate firm to offer a five-year interest-free payment plan.
Earlier reports credit it with having built more than 100 homes. More recently, it broke ground on a 30-unit project at Community 22 Annex in Accra on 31 August 2026, where buyers can start with GH₵10,000 and pay a 40 per cent deposit gradually.
The wider housing picture
The pledge fits the government's wider push. In January, the President cut the sod for 2,000 housing units for the Armed Forces, the first phase of a planned 10,000-unit scheme over five years. Private developers and public programmes can complement each other, since the need is large and no single actor can meet it.
Questions that will matter
A 2050 target is a long horizon, and the gap between 100-odd completed homes and 200,000 is wide.
Prospective buyers, and the public, will naturally want to know how the pledge will be turned into a delivery plan:
What milestones are set for the coming years?
Where will land and financing come from?
Will any arrangement with government be formalised, and on what terms?
How can buyers stay protected through payment plans that run for years?
None of this diminishes the offer. Clear timelines and public reporting would strengthen confidence in this pledge and in the wider affordable housing agenda.
Conclusion
Private-sector commitment, matched by government facilitation, is the kind of partnership that can make homeownership realistic for more Ghanaians. Turning the 200,000-home vision into completed homes will take transparent planning and steady delivery.
