Ghana and Russia Explore a Science and Technology Partnership ‎

On 8 October 2026, H.E. Andrei Ordash, Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Ghana, paid a courtesy call on Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, Minister of Environment, Science and Technology. The two sides discussed cooperation in advancing science, adopting advanced technologies, and building partnerships between universities and research centres in both countries.

A relationship with deep roots
The visit builds on cordial diplomatic relations that have existed since 1958. At Russia Day celebrations in Accra in June, both countries reaffirmed their commitment to deeper cooperation in trade, investment, energy, agriculture, education and technology.

Ghana's Foreign Ministry has also expressed its commitment to strengthening these ties, particularly in education, energy and multilateral cooperation, while encouraging more collaboration in trade, investment and technology.

Education as a bridge
Ambassador Ordash has described human capital development as central to Russia's engagement with Ghana, with plans to expand scholarships, youth exchanges, academic partnerships and professional training. He has said that more than 600 Ghanaian students are currently studying in Russia. A scientific partnership between universities would naturally extend this tradition of academic exchange.

An economic and technological context
The ambassador has said Russia hopes to move beyond traditional trade through long-term investment, joint ventures and technology partnerships. Reports put bilateral trade at about US$800 million. He has also said that trade and investment remain below their potential. Ghana, for its part, is interested in access to technology to modernise its economy, not only in commodity trade. Science and technology cooperation fits that shared interest.

A timely moment
The meeting comes ahead of the third Russia-Africa Summit, scheduled for late October 2026. Ghana has said it looks forward to increased engagement through the Russia-Africa Partnership Forum and the summit.

Looking ahead
At this stage, the discussions express shared goodwill and interest. The ministry may wish to share more detail as talks progress, such as which institutions might take part, what forms of cooperation are envisaged, and how any partnership will serve Ghana's national development priorities. Such clarity would help students, researchers and the wider public follow the process and take full advantage of it.

Ghana has long pursued friendship with all nations. If it is guided by mutual respect, transparency and the interests of Ghanaian institutions, a scientific partnership with Russia could be a constructive addition to the country's international collaborations.
